Giants sign veteran WR Jamison Crowder

The New York Giants are adding veteran receiving help. They are signing former Duke wideout Jamison Crowder to a one-year deal, according to CBS Sports NFL insider Josina Anderson.

Crowder, 29, will be entering his ninth NFL season. He spent three of those years playing in MetLife Stadium, but wearing green with the New York Jets. Crowder struggled to stay on the field last season with the Buffalo Bills, only playing four games and catching six passes for 60 yards. Signing with the Giants completes his tour of all three New York football teams.

He’s played a career 100 games even, totaling 415 receptions for 4,667 yards and 28 touchdowns. The last season when Crowder played a full 16 games was in 2019, playing 12 games apiece in 2020 and 2021.

Why Jamison Crowder Is Underrated

The slot receiver adds another piece of wide receiver depth to a Giants team that didn’t have anything of the sort in 2022. Injuries led the Giants to have a lack of depth at the wide receiver position last season. When Sterling Shepard went down in Week 3, the wide receiver core was stuck with a bunch of unproven players.

New York is trying to prevent the same pitfalls that struck their losing streak in 2022. They’ve done a nice job of adding receiver depth this offseason. They retained veterans Shepard and Darius Slayton, while also bringing back restricted-free agent Isaiah Hodgins, who caught fire down the stretch last season. Along with Crowder, the Giants brought in free agent wideout Parris Campbell. Pair these four players with second-year receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, and the Giants are building a nice queue of pass-catchers.

A Giant mistake of the 2022 season for New York was putting their top cornerback Adoree’ Jackson at punt returner out of necessity. Jackson injured his knee on a punt return, keeping him out for seven games until the Wild Card round. New York went 2-4-1 down the stretch without Jackson.

Why is this relevant? Well, Crowder can provide New York with some punt-returning depth. He may even become the starting punt returner come Week 1.

The depth piece in Crowder that New York got today is a solid one. The Giants are trying to plug the holes that made them as vulnerable as they were last year.
